Advent 2022: winter housing and mail desks

Advent 2022 brought earlier mail-desk hours and a reminder to empty refrigerators before winter travel. Campus Safety asked the community to use well-lit paths after dusk.

Students heading to family homes or a London internship were asked to leave rooms inspection-ready and to update emergency contacts in the Ranger Portal.

Update from the Cupboard food pantry

COVID-19 Update: While our traditional food pantry is temporarily closed to in-person visits, the Cupboard is dedicated to ensuring our students have regular access to quality food throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

As we transition to an online ordering format, you may contact the Cupboard to request a bag of food and snacks to be picked up from the library at a pre-determined time. Please email milvetservices@regis.edu for your food request, or if you would like to donate.

Although the Cupboard is currently closed to visitors, online food donations can be made via the Amazon wish list (https://a.co/0dbXmQF) as well as food donations dropped off inside the entrance of the Dayton Memorial Library. Donations are highly encouraged and desperately needed at this time to address food insecurity as students return to school.

In addition, below is a list of resources to keep you and your family fed.  If you have questions, please reach out to a member of our team at milvetservices@regis.edu.

Regis University updates policies and procedures in Equal Opportunity and Title IX

The U.S. Department of Education has mandated that, as of August 14, 2020, all universities update their policies and disciplinary processes. In line with new regulations, Regis University has revised its process for adjudicating cases of sexual misconduct. Regis continues to enforce affirmative consent and prohibit all forms of sexual misconduct.

Title IX is a federal law that states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” The law also pertains to cases of what Regis calls “sexual misconduct,” which an umbrella term for all forms of sexual harassment, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking or other offenses sexual in nature.

The required changes are significant and sweeping, and Regis University must comply. However, in line with our mission and Jesuit values, we have chosen to take steps beyond the scope of the regulations to ensure an appropriate response to all allegations of sexual misconduct and to provide support for survivors.

Required changes

The new regulations narrow the scope of complaints that universities are required to investigate. For example, sexual harassment is now defined as “unwelcome conduct” that is “so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it effectively denies a person equal access to education.” Regis will continue to prohibit and address behavior that falls outside of Title IX via the Office of Community Standards and Care for students and Human Resources for faculty and staff.

The new regulations also narrow the jurisdiction of the University’s Title IX response. Per the new regulations, Title IX may only cover incidents that are in the United States and areas where the University has “substantial control” over the context and the respondent. This means Title IX no longer covers incidents that occur during study abroad, or that occur off campus (unless it’s during a University-sponsored trip or event). Regis will continue to prohibit and address behavior that falls outside of Title IX via the office of Community Standards and Care for students and Human Resources for faculty and staff.

According to the new law, a formal complaint regarding sexual misconduct will include a live hearing closed to the public. Each party must have an advisor present during the live hearing. Each party’s advisor will have an opportunity to question the other party and any witnesses.

What hasn’t changed

Though in some instances no longer required to by law, Regis will act in accordance with its mission and values to continue the below practices:

  • Confidential resources are available to students, faculty, and staff, regardless of whether a formal complaint is filed

  • Discrimination based on an actual or perceived protected class is prohibited

  • Sexual misconduct is prohibited

  • Retaliation for reporting discrimination or sexual misconduct is prohibited

  • Consent is an affirmative, actively given, unambiguous, and voluntary agreement to engage in a specific sexual activity during a sexual encounter

  • Parties involved in Title IX proceedings have the right to an advisor of their choice

  • All faculty, staff, and some student employees who are not deemed confidential resources are “Responsible Employees,” meaning they must report discrimination and sexual misconduct to the EO and Title IX Coordinator.

  • Supportive Measures (such as excused absences or extended deadlines on assignments) are available through the EO and Title IX Coordinator without making a formal complaint.

Regis University remains committed to promoting violence prevention through training and programming available to the Regis community throughout the year and upon request.

Regis University’s updated Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct and Retaliation policy and procedures, as well as training materials, are available to the public.

Academic Affairs fall 2020 opening plan

Faculty Expectations

  • Faculty must follow minimum use policies of the online learning platform set by academic affairs and their colleges. This enables Regis to migrate content quickly to remote learning if necessary.

  • Faculty will teach their classes in the format and delivery model established by the college.

  • Classroom capacity will be held at 50% in-person, to a limit of 50. A small number of very large rooms can accommodate up to 100. All classes must meet these standards through hybrid or online supplements.

  • Faculty may teach their classes out of doors, weather permitting, if they have asked for and been assigned a location by the Office of the Provost. Social distancing and masking are still required. Faculty may only use their assigned space during class time.

  • Faculty may refuse class entry if a student is not wearing a mask.

  • Faculty should require assigned seats in classrooms to enable contact tracing.

  • Faculty must wear masks in the classroom.

  • All faculty, regardless of assigned teaching method, must have a plan to move fully or partially remote if necessary.

  • Classroom social distancing must be maintained.

  • Faculty must take attendance this fall for the purpose of identifying potential outbreak patterns.

  • All group music lessons will be outside in an enclosed, heated tent for the duration of the semester. The University will purchase “singing masks” for students for the fall.

Masks and Social Distancing

  • Masks must be worn except in personal offices.

  • Social distancing of six feet or more is required.

  • Group size and meetings will be limited in accordance with local restrictions.

  • Meetings should be held virtually whenever possible.

Employees

  • Employees will work on campus except:

    • Those who have requested and obtained HR accommodation requests.

    • Those whose jobs have been identified as potentially fully remote, for those periods of time when the University is reducing its density.

Classroom Management

  • If one student in a classroom is confirmed with COVID-19, other students will be asked to self-monitor for symptoms and get a COVID-19 test after 7 days have passed.

  • If two students in a classroom are confirmed with COVID-19, other students will be asked to quarantine, the classroom will be shut down for use, it will be disinfected using CDC guidelines and closed for 48 hours.

  • If more than two students in a classroom are confirmed with COVID-19, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Outbreak Team will be called in to advise on next steps.

Colleges will adapt these plans to their individual unique college needs. Colleges may have plans that are more stringent than these guidelines, but these minimum guidelines must be met.

Revised schedule for Commencement (three ceremonies)

Based on registrations completed by graduates by midnight Sunday, the University is slightly adjusting the Commencement schedule and plans to hold three ceremonies instead of the original five on July 31, Aug. 1 and 2. Graduates are being informed by email. The fully updated schedule and other information is available at Regis.edu/Commencement.

Reminder: The University may not have any guests on campus during the ceremonies due to restrictions on large public gatherings designed to protect the health and safety of participants. Only graduates and those producing the ceremonies — a limited number of faculty and staff and support vendors — may come to campus to participate. The University will provide a live stream of the ceremonies.
