Graduate health student at Regis University tests positive for COVID-19
A graduate health student at Regis University has tested positive for the coronavirus COVID-19 and is self-quarantined at her personal off-campus residence, according to local public health officials. We wish for her a full and speedy recovery.
The student last attended classes in Claver Hall on Thursday, March 5 but was not exhibiting symptoms until the following week and public health officials say she was not infectious when she was on campus based on Centers for Disease Control advisories. Regis’ traditional on-campus students were on Spring break from Feb. 29 to March 8.
As a precaution, the graduate student’s classmates, instructor and a lab assistant have all been advised on her test result. People she was in contact with off-campus since symptoms first developed on March 11 have all been directed to self-quarantine by public health officials.
Claver Hall has been cleaned multiple times since March 5, and the University has increased the frequency of facility cleanings.
Federal educational privacy law prohibits the University from providing any additional identifying information. The university requests that the student’s privacy be respected.
We understand this first positive test in our community may cause concern but we encourage everyone to remain calm and take the recommended steps to avoid spread of COVID-19, including frequent washing of hands, avoiding touching your face, avoiding gatherings of more than a few people, and practicing social distancing.
The University has suspended all on-campus classes March 16 to 18th; all these classes will resume as online courses on Thursday March 19. University facilities on all campuses, including student housing, will remain open to provide needed services. The Centers for Disease Control advise against travel at this time.
Additional updates on the coronavirus crisis will be posted daily to the site.
